After some successful smaller projects together, Chicagoan rapper Just Adam reached out to create a promotional video for his upcoming album, March.

Adam wanted a short clip created to a segment from one of the songs of the album, and we wanted to keep a likeness to his usual design style. However instead of using a cartoon 2D/3D mix, the idea was to veer into the area of fine art, emulating the stylisation of more traditional media like pastels and oil paints.

The subject matter of the video was based off the inspiration for the album as a whole; March is the month of spring beginning, flowers blooming and the world being brought to life again after winter.

I always love developing a new workflow, and the results from some of my tests were looking really nice. The process involved running a 3D sequence through Topaz, processing each frame individually to simulate the method of a ‘frame by frame painting’.

We decided the colouring pencil look was a bit too intense, but the painterly, Monet-style approach nailed the style Just Adam was going for.
