With some time between jobs, I had a good opportunity to brush up on some of my 3D skills. My main issue at the time was imperfections — I struggled to build scenes that achieved photorealism, due to everything looking a bit too nice and polished.
One of my biggest inspirations for learning motion design was title sequences from Elastic (now MakeMake), like their work for Westworld and Daredevil. Why not try to make one of my own and use it as a learning process?
I booted up Substance Painter and climbed a steep learning curve, but ended up with a final sequence that I was super happy with, albeit with some slightly cringy copy looking back.
The story of the conceptual TV show looked at the benefits and consequences of automating the workforce and how far this could go — in my eyes the drama would be set in a small town and follow two groups: the labour force and the company owners.
First stages of the project looked at developing the style and aesthetic through still scenes — dialling in the materials and lighting before building the storyboard and style frames.
I was sure I wanted a finale to the sequence — in most of my references there was a crescendo to a point of impact.
